Think about the many obligations you have in life. You have bills to pay for goods or services received. You have obligations to your loved ones, that special someone, to your family and friends. You have an obligation to pay back to your school from which you received your education. Recently Mayor Bloomberg of New York gave $350 Million to Johns Hopkins University. That increased his contribution to over $1.1Billion dollars, he said he felt an obligation for the quality education he received.
You may feel an obligation to your community. A community that natured, developed, supported, and prepared you to face the world without fear. One may feel an obligation to their faith community and religious organization because there you were affirmed and learned moral principals that have served you well in life.
When you read Romans 8:12-17(NIV) you discover you have your ultimate obligation to God.
"Therefore, brothers and sisters, we have an obligation-but it is not to the flesh, to live according to it. For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live. For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. The spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry,' Abba, Father.' The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs-heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory."
Yes as children of God your ultimate obligation is to him. Do that and everything else will fall in place.
