The brevity of life reminds me to "take some time to smell the roses." Too often we focus upon the thorns we see and fail to marvel at the beauty. Too often we permit others to negatively effect our mood and temperament instead of seeking the peace and contentment God has always available to you.
Last night I had an amazing experience watching and listening to Lalah Hathaway perform at the Howard Theater. For me the highlight was when she sung, "A Song For you." This was the signature song that her father Donny Hathaway would sing. Instantly I was transported to Blues Alley, an intimate jazz club located in Georgetown, in the winter of 1978. I was in the audience listening to her father, Donny, singing the same song. As those two experiences connected together, I silently thanked God for allowing me to have the opportunity to connect these two marvelous experiences within my own life. No one knew as a tear rolled down my cheek the joy I felt in that moment. God had blessed me with an opportunity to "take time to smell the roses, " once again.
When have you experienced breath-taking moments, indescribable situations, magnificent marvels, or celestial scenes? When have you felt deep spiritual moments that stimulate fond memories? When was the last time you experienced joy?
I'm reminded of a scripture verse found in The Book of Nehemiah 8:10 (NIV), "Go and enjoy choice food and sweet drinks, and send some to those who have nothing prepared. This day is holy to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of The Lord is your strength."
Exercise your strength by experiencing the joy God has available to you everyday.
