For Those Who Come in Last

"They will set out last, under their standards." Numbers 2:31

In life, everyone cannot be first, is it alright to be last? Scripture says that the "last shall be first, and the first shall be last." Nevertheless, there appears to be very severe consequences to coming in last place in this world. It seems the one who is last gets the least. It seems the one who is last is quickly forgotten. It seems the one who is last is ridiculed.

The text this morning clearly identifies that the tribe of Dan will be last in the formation. They are to bring up the rear. Their position matters since they are truly a part of the host as were the foremost tribes; they followed the same fiery cloudy pillar, ate of the same manna, drank of the same spiritual rock, and journeyed to the same inheritance.

Those who are last should cheer up since you are still a part of God's army. Someone must be last. Someone must do the menial tasks for our Lord. Someone has to bring up the rear, so, why not you?

Remember those who are last serve a very useful place. They pick up the stragglers. They recover lost property. They protect the rear from attack.

Remember the rear guard is a place of danger. Foes come from behind as well as before. When people are doubting, becoming hopeless, wavering in their spirits, become lost in their faith; those who pick up the rear are able to give them comfort, encouragement, and direction.

There is a role for everyone and every role is important in God's army.

Yes, even for those who are last!
